Mullins averaged 22.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals

HOUSTON — Chris Mullins was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, announced Monday afternoon by the conference office.

Mullins had the best week of his young career in leading Rice to a 1-1 record this week. The freshman averaged 22.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals. He connected on 50.0% (13-of-26) from the floor, 50.0% (4-of-8) from three and 83.3% (15-of-18).

Mullins began the week by leading Rice to a 78-73 victory over St. Edward's. The freshman scored a career-high 24 points, including 14 in the second half, with two steals. With Rice trailing 73-71 with less than two minutes to play, Mullins stole the ball at half court and drove in for a layup to tie the game. He then gave Rice the lead for good with a pair of free throws as the Owls scored the final seven points of the game. For the game, he was 7-of-10 from the floor, two-of-three from three and eight-of-nine from the free throw line.

He followed that up two days later with 21 points, a career-high four rebounds and two steals against UC Santa Barbara. His two free throws with 30 seconds left tied the game and sent it into overtime.

Mullins became the first Rice freshman to score 20 points in consecutive games since Marcus Evans in 2015-16.
