Bella Killgore

Soccer Defeats Charlotte, 1-0, for Third Straight Shutout

10/16/2022 3:25:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Charlotte, N.C.Grace Collins broke a scoreless tie in the 57th minute and Bella Killgore made nine save as Rice defeated Charlotte, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at TransAmerica Field.

The Details
Rice was forced into a defensive game early on as Charlotte came out forcing the play in the first 20 minutes, getting off four shots and forcing goalkeeper Killgore to make a pair of saves. Midfielder Delaney Schultz got Rice's first shot in the eighth minute from 20 yards away, but it was blocked. In the 30th minute, forward Grace Collins had the Owls' best chance of the half, getting back the defense and sending a shot toward the left side of the net. But Charlotte goalkeeper Brenna Murray made a diving save to keep it scoreless. The 49ers had a chance just before the half off a corner kick, but Tash Hudson's header went off the crossbar.

The second half started with Collins weaving her way past the defense, getting in close for a shot but sending it wide. But just two minutes later, she got another chance and this time made it count, taking a pass up the middle from Catarina Albuquerque before getting in alone on the keeper and sending it into the right corner to break the deadlock. That's when Killgore took over. She made a save from 20 yards in the 64th minute. Four minutes later, Charlotte's Tash Hudson came in alone, but Killgore made a kick save. Then, in the final minutes, Bailey Manfredi sent a shot toward the left side of the net. But Killgore made a diving stop, getting a hand on it to knock the ball away and preserve the win.

What Head Coach Brian Lee Had to Say
"Winning on the road is hard and Charlotte put in a great effort. Our back line and Bella (Killgore) were up for it and Grace (Collins) again showed her quality and toughness to get the winner. It was a big three points on the road."
